Contest details and official rules are archived below...
Contest ends/Entries due by: January 15, 2013
Create a music video to win one of 5 autographed copies of Somnia!
The complete official rules are below, but here's the contest in a nutshell:
Create a video using one of the songs from Somnia or OtherSong, and upload it to YouTube.
(Even if you've never made a video, the fact that you can read this means you probably have the tools to make one...check out the "How to Get Started" section below.)
You can use still images, video footage, animation, or any combination. Your video can be as simple a slideshow, or as complex as a big-label music video...
If you use any content you didn't make yourself, make sure it's in the public domain or covered by a free-to-use license (like a Creative Commons license), or get written permission from whoever did create it (a scan of a signed permission form is fine). Be sure to describe your sources in the video description.
Include "Longing for Orpheus" and the song title in the video itself, the video title, or the video description (at least two of the three).
Send a link to your video "email@example.com"
You can submit any number of videos, but you can only win once.
The 5 winning submissions will receive a CD copy Somnia, autographed my some of the musicians who performed on the album. (At present, the CDs are two autographs short of a full set...I hope to have everyone sign them by the time the contest ends, but can’t promise that it will happen).
If you've already made a video that fits the contest rules, you can still submit it! In other words, it doesn't have to be a video you made after the contest began.
For legal reasons, the contest is only open to residents of the USA, the United Kingdom and Canada. Sorry :(
How to Get Started
There are many, many movie-making applications out there, but here are the basic, user-friendly options you probably already have, depending on your operating system:
If you want to make a video, but don't have a camera or any ideas of what to photograph or film, the internet can help. Here are a few of the many sources of free-to-use photos and videos you could use:
The Internet Archive hosts a huge collection of movies, many of which are public domain or Creative Commons licensed (each video's page has a note telling you what the rights status is).
The stock.xchng is a source for free to use images...you could make slide shows for every song on both albums from this collection, and hardly scratch it's surface. There are a few different license options they can use, so be sure to check the license on any image you want to use.
XStockVideo.com provides beautiful stock video footage for exactly this kind of project. They sell HD copies, but the 'web size' versions are, and that's all you need for this project!
Just try a Google search for terms like "free to use," "public domain," and "creative commons," along with "images" or "video," and you'll find that this is just the tip of the iceberg.
